Tom McShane is a musician from Northern Ireland. His first releases, the lo-fi, home recorded "Songs Are Sad" and the follow-up album, "Departures" have attracted critical acclaim.

Tom releases his new single, "Fighter", on June 23rd 2008 on split 7" Vinyl and Digital Download. Co-produced by Oppenheimer’s Rocky O’Reilly, the bejeweled and brassy “Fighter” represents the latest peak of Tom’s compositional powers. “I admire those songwriters who tell complex stories compressed within as few lines as possible,” comments McShane, “and that’s what I aimed to achieve with Fighter. It’s about the contradictions of a character who is brave enough to get in the ring but too cowardly to face himself.”

As well as drawing on the lo-fi influence of Smog, Nick Drake and Mount Eerie, the mood also calls to mind the dark tone of one of Tom's biggest heroes: Charles Mingus.

Tom joins forces on the vinyl release with Escape Act, and their rousing, summer-filled anthem God Says, recorded by Andy Miller (Fratellis, Sons & Daughters) at Glasgow's Chem19 Studios.

Tom's tour is all set for July. Check the dates in the tour section below.

Stuart Bailie, Oh Yeah:
"Tom is in the company of those meta-sad acts that have graced the Domino label, like Bill Callahan, Elliot Smith and Will Oldham… a steady voice in a landscape of shrill amateurs."

Colin Carberry, Hotpress
"Even a cursory glance at his excellent new EP Departures, reveals that Tom's muse is in rude and vibrant health. Progressing effortlessly from last year's Scene at the Citadel, the four tracks on view have a breadth and colour that confirm Tom as one of Belfast's most promising talents."

Captain Obvious, ThanksCaptainObvious.net
"Tom's songs contain an underlying sense of optimism underneath the melancholic surface. If you're into minimalistic slow-burning fare along the lines of Smog, Red House Painters, and Idaho, ...give Departures a listen."

Marty Neill - NI Music Magazine (A & R Section)
"Tom has made his under confidence and fragility the stuff of high art. Essential stuff."

Dave Roy - The Irish News
"The music of Tom McShane is at once captivating and heartbreaking. His are tender tunes plucked straight from a broken and patched up heart, performed with rare poise and passion. With his band in tow, Tom can shift gears between wistful laments and sundappled guitar pop with ease."
